Most of the territory (80%) is occupied by the Sahara Desert, the rest is the Sahel semi–desert. The lack of access to the sea, the desert and proximity to the equator make the climate difficult for most of the year. The country regularly experiences droughts, sometimes lasting for several years. The tourist season lasts from December to February, at which time the climate softens slightly. Among the fauna living in national parks (Double Ve), it is often possible to meet various reptiles (snakes, lizards, crocodiles) hippos and elephants (near the banks of the Niger River and Lake Chad), as well as lions, giraffes, antelopes, gazelles, hyenas, cheetahs and jackals.

History

In the past, Niger was a colony of France and gained independence in 1960. The political situation in Niger is far from ideal – several military coups have taken place in the country during the period of independence.

The economy is based on agriculture and mining; uranium ore mining is the basis of exports. Niger is a poor country even by African standards, and in terms of education and life expectancy has one of the worst indicators in the world.
